THE EFFECT OF DIGITAL PEDAGOGY ON TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Abstract

This article presents a narrative literature review examining the effect of digital pedagogy on teaching effectiveness in higher education. As universities worldwide accelerate their digital transformation agendas, understanding how digital pedagogical practices shape instructional quality, student engagement, and learning outcomes has become an urgent scholarly and policy concern. Using a narrative review approach, this study synthesizes findings from bibliometric analyses, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and empirical studies published mainly between 2020 and 2026, retrieved from Scopus-indexed and internationally recognized databases. The review is organized around four themes: (1) the conceptual evolution of digital pedagogy, (2) digital teaching competence and its relationship with teaching quality, (3) pedagogical frameworks that mediate the technology-effectiveness relationship, and (4) contextual and equity factors that condition outcomes. The synthesis indicates that digital pedagogy exerts a generally positive effect on teaching effectiveness when technological tools are deliberately aligned with sound pedagogical design rather than adopted for their own sake, and that teacher digital competence, self-efficacy, and professional development are consistent mediating mechanisms. However, the magnitude of this effect is moderated by infrastructural access, institutional support, and regional digital divides. The article concludes that digital pedagogy should be conceptualized not merely as technology integration but as a pedagogical transformation requiring sustained investment in teacher capacity building, equitable infrastructure, and context-sensitive implementation.
